Rock and Water Garden
Originally laid out in formal family beds as an educational feature, this area was redesigned as a series of flower beds in the Italianate style in Victorian times by the fourth curator John Ewing. Clarence Elliott, (founder member of the Alpine Garden Society), remodelled the area as a rock and water garden in 1929-1930.

A series of small waterfalls and pools provide a peaceful setting for a variety of ferns and water-loving plants. Gunnera tinctoria dominates the lower pond. A number of special trees and shrubs can be found nearby, these include Corylopsis pauciflora, Juniperus coxii, Pinus aristata and Callitropsis nootkatensis ‘Pendula’. Recent developments have led to a somewhat oriental appearance with the addition of several beautiful Japanese maples and a cloud-pruned pine.
