Rock and Water Garden

This was originally laid out in the Italianate style in Victorian times and was then redesigned by Clarence Elliott, (founder member of the Alpine Society), in 1929-1930.

It is now a series of small pools dropping between rock-work and paving to the main pool. Meadowsweet, Filipendula ulmaria, and Iris sibirica enjoy the damper conditions round the main pool.

The contrasting shapes of Gunnera tinctoria, the Chilean Rhubarb and Dierama pulcherrimum (angel’s fishing rods) are spectacular. A Corylopsis pauciflora flowers in spring and a Yucca gloriosa in the summer.

Notable trees and shrubs include a Pinus aristata (Rocky Mountain bristlecone pine), a Taxodium distichum (swamp cypress), a Xanthocyparis nootkatensis ‘Pendula’ (weeping Nootka cypress) and a Betula pendula ‘Tristis’ (weeping silver birch) which is a county champion in girth and height.
