Lower Lawns
At the top of the drive from the Thompson Road entrance and next to the AGM Border is an area of open grass with many interesting trees

A sunny open area with Rhododendron ‘Cynthia’ providing a blaze of colour in May.
Interesting trees to look for include the Indian Horse Chestnut, Aesculus indica ‘Sydney Pearce’, which flowers later (May–June) and the common Horse Chestnut (A hippocastanum).
The Japanese Wingnut, Pterocarya rhoifolia, grows nearby and the strings of winged fruits can be compared with those of P fraxinifolia on Birch Hill.
