Long Border

Collection of North American plants.

This area of the Garden has difficult conditions, but after clearing the area, 60 tons each of gravel and composted manure were worked into the poor soil.

The area has been planted with North American ericaceous plants and rhododendrons, together with asters and bulbs.  Further along are a variety of Californian plants such as Ribes speciosum and Ceanothus, the Californian lilac.

At the top end, near the sheltered Mediterranean Climate Garden, South American plants, such as Lobelia tupa, Cortaderia selloana and Buddleja globosa and the Mexican weeping pine, minus patulata are flourishing.

Lower down the slope, plantings include a range of North American Kalmia latifolia and K. angustifolia varieties. Particularly good in Spring and early Summer are swathes of Erythronium ‘White Beauty’ and trilliums.

Cercis canadensis can also be found here.
